On July 5th and 6th, 2023, the 8th Environmental Microorganism Application and Risk Control Symposium, cohosted by the State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Microorganism Application and Risk Control, and the State Key Joint Laboratory of Environmental Simulation and Pollution Control, was successfully held in Tianjin. The event was co-organized by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tianjin University, the School of Environment of Tsinghua University, and the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. Nearly 200 experts, faculties, and students from universities and research institutions across the country participated in the symposium.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Wang Can from Tianjin University. Professor Lu Yun, Executive Deputy Director of the State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Microorganism Application and Risk Control, and Associate Professor from Tsinghua University, delivered the opening speech. Professor Lv Xuebin, Associate Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Tianjin University, gave the welcome address.

The symposium featured keynote speeches by Professor Yu Hanqing from the University of Science and Technology of China, Researcher Liu Shuangjiang from the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Li Xiaoyan from Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, and Professor Bai Mindong from Tianjin University, capturing the attention of numerous academics and experts.
The event had a total of five sub-sessions, covering topics such as biological treatment and resource recovery of pollutants, risks and control of harmful microorganisms, airborne microbe utilization and risk control, construction of virtual teaching organization for water treatment biology, and a special session for outstanding graduate students. The conference provided a platform for extensive exchanges of high-quality research achievements, and sparked discussions among scholars and students on new technologies, new ideas, and new applications in environmental microbiology, contributing to the development of environmental microbial technologies in our country. Additionally, the conference incorporated discussions on relevant course teaching for the first time, marking an important innovation through the integration of research and teaching conferences.
Lastly, the conference concluded with keynote speeches by Professor Yuan Baoling from Jilin Jianzhu University and Professor Wang Xin from Nankai University. Many representatives at the conference expressed great satisfaction and a sense of unfulfilled curiosity. The next conference will be hosted by Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology in that ancient city.
