IUVA Asia Workshop 2021 held successfully

SOE, Tsinghua, February 22nd, 2021 (correspondents: Chen Zhongyun, Ao Xiuwei, Yin Ran) On February 18th, 2021, IUVA Asia Workshop, co-held by the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) and Tsinghua University, was launched on Zoom. It was a two-day workshop with nearly 500 delegates from 38 countries and regions in five continents to discuss the principles, innovations, and developments in UV technology.

The workshop highlights six topics: UV disinfection technology, UV-based advanced oxidation technology, new UV technology, UV reactor design, UV applications in medical and health care, and the future of UV technology applications. 35 keynote presentations and 20 quick demonstrations in the workshop explored the green and sustainable future of UV technology from multi-dimensions.

Associate Professor Sun Wenjun, School of Environment, Tsinghua University and Professor Kumiko Oguma, University of Tokyo, Japan were the chairs of the workshop. Karl Linden, Professor of University of Colorado, USA; Ernest R. Blatchley , Professor of Purdue University, USA; Ron Hofmann, Professor of University of Toronto, Canada; Jim Malley, Professor, University of New Hampshire, USA; Sun Wenjun, Associate Professor of Tsinghua University; Rich Simons, Director of Applied Science, AquiSense Technologies, USA; Michaela Stefan of Trojan Technologies, Canada; Ted Mao, Vice President of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA); William Mitch, Professor of Stanford University, USA; Hu Jiangyong, Professor of National University of Singapore; Kumiko Oguma, Professor of University of Tokyo, Japan, and other scientists in the UV technology research field were invited to give presentations. Besides, more than 30 renowned experts in the industry, including Jeff, a senior scientist from Boeing, USA, also gave informative presentations.

In the keynote presentation on the morning of February 18th, Associate Professor Sun Wenjun presented the latest research and applications of UV technology in the 21st century. Since the SARS outbreak in 2003, the sewage treatment industry has strengthened disinfection. Tsinghua University's School of Environment has taken the lead in researching UV technology and developing a series of UV national standards. The country's first third-party verification center based on the Research Institute for Environmental Innovation (Suzhou) Tsinghua has also been established. These developments have boosted the UV industry in China.

At present, China's UV disinfection application of municipal sewage covers a scale of more than 80 million tons/day and supplies municipal water more than 6 million tons/day, which ensures the security of drinking water and the aquatic environment.

In the Q&A session of the conference, the experts and scholars had a lively discussion and exchanges about new findings, results, ideas, and experience on various topics. In the quick demonstrations, scholars from different countries showed the latest theoretical research results, new product development, and the latest application of UV technology. In addition, a special session for young scholars of the workshop was set up, offering a free exchange platform for the new generation of scholars to exchange their ideas on technical exchanges, research directions, career planning, industry prospects, and others.

This workshop was a high-level international academic exchange event of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) held in China for the first time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UV technology market sees a rise in both demand and application fields. This workshop focuses on the history and developments of UV technology, brings together experts on the most cutting-edge UV technology. The workshop provides the most influential academic exchange platform in the field of UV, and plays a critical role in the promotion and application of UV technology in China and internationally.
