A special report by Professor Xia Huang from the School of Environment on the Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in Wastewater during COVID-19 at the Global Water Research Coalition (GWRC) Seminar

School of Environment, Tsinghua University, April 22, 2021 (Correspondent Dong Qian) On the evening of April 22nd, Professor Xia Huang from the School of Environment, Tsinghua University was invited to deliver a special report at a seminar on SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater organized by the Global Water Research Coalition (GWRC) to introduce the development of SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater in China. This online seminar was chaired by Professor Gertjan Medema of the KWR Watercycle Research Institute of Delft University in the Netherlands, and attended by more than 40 experts and scholars from different countries.


GWRC is a global non-profit water research coalition, whose members are renowned experts and scholars in the field of urban water systems from many countries, with the aim of promoting research progress and sharing of achievements in urban water systems worldwide. GWRC has recently organized a series of seminars on the SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater and early warning of COVID-19 outbreaks base on wastewater surveillance.


At this seminar, Professor Xia Huang delivered a report entitled "The Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Wastewater in China". Focusing on the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater carried out by the School of Environment with the support of the major research project of "Relations Between SARS-CoV-2 Transmission and the Environment, and Risk Prevention and Control", Professor Huang elaborated on the detection method of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, attenuation and survival of the virus in wastewater, and the application of wastewater monitoring in the early warning of epidemic, and also shared the research experience and work progress of the School of Environment in the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.

After the report, several international experts and scholars had in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics such as the detection methods of COVID-19 in wastewater, and early warning of epidemic base on wastewater surveillance.


Experts and scholars from different countries attended the meeting
