Undergraduate Student Gao Juan and Graduate Student Zhang Yuan of Tsinghua University Elected 2019 Rhodes Scholars

Tsinghua University News, December 6th—The list of winners of the 2019 Rhodes Scholars was officially released on November 25th, 2019. Four winners shortlisted from 14 candidates became the fifth batch of Chinese winners of the Rhodes Scholarship. The winners, all females, are Gao Juan and Zhang Yuan from Tsinghua University, Yan Yan from Nanjing University and Zhou Xiaorui from the National University of Singapore and Sciences Po, who will enroll in the University of Oxford and embark on their new journeys as Rhodes Scholars in 2020.

Gao Juan

Born in Chongqing, Gao Juan is committed to promoting China’s environmental awareness. Currently the top student of Tsinghua University’s Global Environment Program, she has already paid a one-year academic visit to University of Oxford as one of the ten 2018 Yinghua Scholars of Tsinghua University.

Zhang Yuan

A student of Tsinghua University’s Schwarzman Scholars Program, Zhang Yuan graduated from the School of Architecture and Xinya College, Tsinghua University, as the top undergraduate student. She won the national scholarship twice, and was a winner of Tsinghua University’s 2018 Special Grade Scholarship for Undergraduate Students. In addition, she has six times been appointed the teaching assistant to the General Education Program of Xinya College and now serves as the instructor for the Class of 2019 at Xinya College.

The year 2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the Rhodes Scholarship in China. 20 Rhodes Scholars have been elected in China to date to study abroad in the fields of statistics, law, political science, biology, economics and management, media, environmental protection, psychiatry, sociology, public policy, criminology and drama.

A number of Tsinghua University alumni have been elected Rhodes Scholars, including Ren Naying (graduate of 2016, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures) in 2015, Chen Yuxuan (graduate of 2016, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures) and Huang Qin (graduate of 2015, School of Economics and Management) in 2016, and Peng Yali (graduate of 2016, School of Law) in 2018.
