IIIS Holds 2012 Physics Undergraduate Summer School

IIIS 2012 Physics Undergraduate Summer School took place on May 11-13. Top third-year undergraduates from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronatics, Wuhan University and others joined the event.
In her opening remarks, IIIS Deputy Dean Prof. Amy Yuexuan Wang introduces the research institutes, discipline development, faculty, talent cultivation and international exchange of IIIS, and the progress and plan of Center for Quantum Information (CQI) in particular. She says CQI aims to develop a world-class platform for the teaching and research of quantum information in China, so as to develop innovative technology and provide support for China’s quantum information industry. CQI is featuring in interdisciplinary design of experiments, international perspective of view and combination of theory and experiment. Prof. Wang hopes that students can gain some exposure into the cutting-edge field of quantum information at the summer school. Prof. Luming Duan also encourages student to have passion for what they do and enjoy the process of learning at the opening.
Prof. Duan gave a talk on “Quantum Information: Mathematical Theory and Foundations” and Assoc. Profs. Giulio Chiribella, Kihwan Kim, and Assist. Profs. Xiongfeng Ma, Man Hong Yung, Hongchen Jiang, Alioscia Hamma all gave talks on their research interests and work. The topics varied form quantum computer, quantum communication to quantum entanglement. Students also joined a campus tour.
The summer school closed on May 13 and students were awarded the certificate. Prof. Wang said that the closing was not an end but a new start. She encouraged them to rise to challenges, to keep trying and to improve themselves.
The summer school has been well-received and students have got a more clear idea on their research interests and future plans.
