Registration for the graduate students was held on September 2. Tsinghua enrolled 1,195 doctoral students and 2,861 master’s students in 2008. The opening ceremony for the new graduate students was held on September 3. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin, University Council Chairman Chen Xi and other senior administrators attended the gathering for the more than 4,000 incoming students.
In his welcoming address, President Gu gave congratulations to the seated students. He attached importance to research interests and encouraged them to be “happy researchers”. President Gu also emphasized the importance of making research plans. He encouraged the students to develop their innovative spirit, be responsible, and learn from others.
