Automation in Power Grid Dispatch

A project named “A New Generation of Energy Management with Three Dimensional Coordination” has recently passed technical appraisal from the Ministry of Education. The project has been developed over the past 15 years by a research team led by Professor Zhang Boming from Tsinghua’s Department of Electrical Engineering.

With rapid economic growth and improvement in people’s living standards, the demand for electricity in China increases year by year. To meet the daily demand for a safe and stable supply of electricity, regional power grids were interconnected to form a super-large-scale power grid. The new generation of Energy Management System (N-EMS) incorporates creative techniques developed in the field of power grid dispatch automation which aims to improve the grid’s operation and prevent blackouts. The new system is designed to run in a coordinated manner in three dimensions--spatial scale, temporal scale and control objective scale. It includes an early warning and security countermeasure function which issues an early alert to dispatchers at the control center to enable them to make control command adjustments.

(N-EMS is put into use in Jiangxi Province Power Grid)

More than 15 power grids have adopted the N-EMS techniques to improve secure and economic operation. Over RMB 200 million has been saved since the key techniques of the N-EMS were implemented in the provincial power grid control centers. The system will play an important role to ensure safe economic power supply operations in China.
