Professor John W. Hutchinson, Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering, Harvard University, was invited to be honorary professor of Tsinghua University on August 24.
Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe attended the awarding ceremony held in the Science & Technology Building and awarded the letter of appointment to Professor Hutchinson. Professor Zheng Quanshui, Dean of the Department of Engineering Mechanics, hosted the ceremony.
After the ceremony, Professor Hutchinson gave a lecture entitled “Atoms to macro in the fracture of metal/ceramic interfaces.”
Professor John W. Hutchinson is a world-class leader in mechanics. He is recognized worldwide for contributions that have permanently impacted the field of theoretical and applied mechanics. The depth and range of his contributions are overwhelming. He has been a leader in virtually all of the significant developments in materials modeling for at least the past twenty years. He is a member of US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
