Professor Lawrence Summers Speaks at Tsinghua Forum

Professor Lawrence H. Summers, Former President of Harvard University, delivered a speech on January 17 to The Tsinghua Forum, entitled “Economic Development in Asia: Challenges and Consequences.”

Talking about the Asian economic crisis and the economic development of Asia, Professor Summers stressed the importance of preventing financial risks and establishing good economics relations with other countries in China’s economic development. He also attached importance to balancing economic growth and environmental development in his speech.

 

After the speech, Professor Summers answered questions raised by the students. Professor Bai Chong-en from School of Economics and Management hosted the speech.

Tsinghua President Gu Binglin met and had a talk with Professor Summers, exchanging ideas on student cultivation and discipline development.

Lawrence H. Summers served as president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. An eminent scholar and admired public servant, Mr. Summers has taught on the faculty at Harvard and MIT. He has served in a series of senior public policy positions, including political economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, chief economist of the World Bank, and secretary of the treasury of the United States. In 1993, he received the John Bates Clark Medal, given every two years to the outstanding American economist under the age of 40. Mr. Summers received his B.S. from MIT and his Ph. D. in economics from Harvard.

The Tsinghua Forum features speakers who address a wide range of topics, including science and technology, economics, and society and culture as they relate to the development of China and the world. The Tsinghua Forum convenes four times a year.
