President Su Guaning of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, came to Tsinghua with a delegation June 15 to discuss establishment of cooperative projects between the two schools.
Accompanying President Su on the visit were Associate Professor Tan Teng Kee, Director of Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre, Professor Chen Dingqi, Dean of Nanyang Business School, and Professor Guo Zhenyu, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
“The aim of our visit is to learn more about Tsinghua’s experience so as to transform Nanyang Technological University into a multi-faceted and comprehensive university,” President Su said.
Professor Chen Xi, president of the University Council, met the delegation and chaired the discussion.
NTU hopes to work with Tsinghua to open management training programs on the mainland, President Su said.
Owing to its fast economic development in recent years, and its priority of combining foreign cultures with its own, Singapore has become an ideal place for executives to gain management experience. All courses in the training programs will be taught in both Chinese and English.
President Su said NTU is on the way to becoming a comprehensive university, and hopes to model itself after Tsinghua in this respect.
Also during the meeting, Professor Su and Professor Chen talked about the student exchange program between their schools.
After the meeting, the delegation visited Tsinghua School of Continuing Education, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Public Management, and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Professor Su was named president of Nanyang Technological University last December. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta, master’s degree from California Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He worked for 30 years in Singapore’s defense science sector, and was head of the Defense Science Organization, Defense Science and Technology Agency, and Ministry of Defense.
