Department of Hydraulic Engineering Celebrates 60th Anniversary
Department of Hydraulic Engineering celebrated its 60th anniversary at Tsinghua University auditorium on April 28. Chinese Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei and Deputy Director of The NPC Financial and Economic Committee, former Minister of Water Resources Wang Shucheng, Chairman of Tsinghua University Council HuHeping, Tsinghua Vice President Qiu Yong, and approximately 1,000 hydraulic engineering experts, students and alumni, as well as colleagues from brother universities and colleges attended the convention.
Department of Hydraulic Engineering has long been a first-class discipline of Tsinghua, with outstanding achievements in education, scientific research, community service as well as cultural transmission and innovation. Over the past 60 years, it has generated over 6,000 distinguished talents. From presiding over the design of Miyun Reservoir in the 1950s, the department has been taking the lead or involved in almost every major hydraulic project in China including Three Gorges Project and South-North Water Diversion Project.
Council Chairman HuHeping expressed his best regards for the departments’ faculties, students and alumni. He highly appreciated the department’s idea of talent cultivation “Wise people are fond of water and kindhearted ones like mountains”.
Chinese Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei addressed the convention and emphasized the important role the department has played in the hydraulic industry. In his speech, Chen pointed out the new situation and new mission of the hydraulic industry, and he also expressed hope for the department in fields like talent cultivation, discipline construction and scientific innovation.
