Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures was launched in the University’s Main Building on September 13. Professor Joseph Deiss, Former President of the Swiss Confederation and Vice Chairman of the International Advisory Committee, Zurish Finacial Services, visited the campus and delivered the first lecture in the series entitled“Switzerland--China’s Performing Partner in Europe”.

The Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures includes two parts—the Global Leadership series and the Advanced Studies series. The Global Leadership series features such speakers as foreign state and international organization leaders, board chairmen, CEOs of international companies, overseas university presidents, and world-famous scholars. They will address topics mainly in the humanities and social sciences. The Advanced Studies series will invite renowned academic prize winners including Nobel Prize winners, Fields Medal winners, Turing Award winners, and renowned scholars to speak on cross-disciplinary knowledge, frontiers studies, and recent research in related fields.

The Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures has been incorporated into Tsinghua’s elective courses system. Students who attend eight lectures can apply for one credit. “The Tsinghua Global Vision Lectures widen our global vision and our knowledge,” said Li Yonghua, a first-year graduate student from the Department of Engineering Physics.

In his 70-minute speech to an overflow student crowd, Professor Deiss introduced Switzerland’s population, environment, and economic development plans. He talked about cooperation between Switzerland and China. Afterward, he answered questions raised by the students.

“It’s a better chance to have face-to-face communication with renowned people and scientific masters. As long as I have time, I will participate in these lectures,” said Qiang, a senior student from the Department of Automotive Engineering.

Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe exchanged ideas with Professor Deiss prior to the speech.
